The True Story Behind Runty Ralph: How I Got My Name

Runty Ralph is the puppy at the center of Catherine Martell’s children’s picture-book series, and his story is true. Runty Ralph was born stillborn on a cold winter night in Arizona, and he survived. I’m Catherine, his dog mom, and I turned that night and everything that followed into Runty Ralph: How I Got My Name, the first book in a series that now has three titles.

If you landed here searching for the Runty Ralph author, or you’re wondering whether this dog book for kids is based on a real dog, this page tells the whole story: where Runty Ralph came from, how the books came to be, and which one to pick up first.

A Cold Winter Night in Arizona

The night Runty Ralph was born, nobody expected him to live.

It was cold, it was late, and the hours felt heavy with worry. Runty Ralph came into the world not breathing, and for a few terrible moments all anyone could do was hope. Then, against every expectation, he began to fight his way into life. Those first minutes taught me something I have never forgotten: tiny does not mean weak.

He was born still, and then he wasn’t. I still think of it as a small miracle, and I don’t use that word lightly. What I know for certain is that a very tiny puppy decided to stay, and that decision changed my life.

Runtyย Ralph’s first days were fragile and full of care. Every hour was about helping him hold on, and every small sign of progress felt enormous. He grew stronger, and I grew more certain that he had come into my life for a reason.

How Runty Ralph got his name

Every name has a story, and Runty Ralph’s is the reason the first book carries the subtitle How I Got My Name.

The name says it all. “Runty” describes the smallest puppy, the one nobody would have picked as the hero. “Runty Ralph” is the name he grew into, and it stuck because it fit him: resilient and full of spirit. Put the two words together and you have his whole story.

The word “runty” can sound like an insult. In our house it became a badge of honor, and that idea sits at the heart of every book in the series: being the smallest in the room says nothing about how big your heart or your courage can be.

Turning a real dog’s life into a children’s series

I never set out to be a children’s author. I set out to be Runty Ralph’s mom.

The idea for the books grew out of the story itself. Runty Ralph’s survival was the kind of story people wanted to hear, and I realized children needed it most: a hero who starts small, faces big things, and refuses to give up. I wrote it for Runty Ralph first, and then for every child who has ever felt too small.

The first book tells Runty Ralph’s origin story: his arrival, his survival, and the bond between a dog and his mom. From there the series follows Runty Ralph into the wider world, where the lessons get bigger and the adventures get a little scarier.

Here is the series in reading order:

  1. Runty Ralph: How I Got My Name โ€“ Runty Ralph’s true origin story, from a stillborn puppy on a winter night in Arizona to the dog who changed his mom’s life. It’s about love, hope and resilience, and it’s the best place to start.
  2. Runty Ralph Visits the Big Dogs โ€“ Everyone tells Runty Ralph he’s too small to join the adventure. With his loyal friend Grace beside him, he steps into a world of new friends and a few frightening moments, and learns that strength comes from within. His motto: “Never give up!”
  3. Runty Ralph Meets a Bully at the Dog Park โ€“ The newest book, in which Runty Ralph faces a bully at the dog park. It gives families a gentle way to talk about unkind behavior, standing up for yourself, and the friends who stand beside you.

The books work best in order because Book 1 explains who Runty Ralph is and why he sees the world the way he does. Each one also stands on its own for a child who picks it up cold.

You can see all three, with purchase links, on the Runty Ralph books page, and meet Grace and the rest of the cast on the characters page.

What kids and parents take away from Runty Ralph’s story

I hear from families at signings and events, and the reactions tend to land in the same few places.

Kids connect with being small. Young readers know what it feels like to be the youngest, the shortest, or the last one picked. Runty Ralph gives them a hero who feels the same way and keeps going anyway.

Parents get a way into harder conversations. A story about a puppy who nearly didn’t make it opens the door to talking about courage, fear, kindness, friendship and standing up for yourself. A dog can say things at bedtime that a lecture can’t.

Dog families see themselves. If you’ve ever looked at your own dog and thought, “you changed my life,” this series is for you.

The themes that run through all three books are resilience, friendship, courage and self-belief. A few questions you can ask after reading together:

  • What made Runty Ralph feel small? What made him feel brave?
  • Who helped Runty Ralph when things got hard? Who helps you?
  • When have you kept trying even though you wanted to quit?

The books suit read-aloud time for young children. Parents, grandparents and teachers can read them together with a child, one adventure at a time. Book 1 was also an Amazon Best Seller in Children’s Latin America Fiction, which still surprises and delights me.

What’s next for Runty Ralph

Book 3, Runty Ralph Meets a Bully at the Dog Park, is out now, and the series isn’t finished. Runty Ralph still has plenty of stories to tell, so keep an eye on the books page and my social channels for news.

Runty Ralph also gets out of the book and into the community. I’ve met readers at events around Tucson, including bookstore celebrations and dog-friendly gatherings, where families can say hello, take photos, and talk about their own dogs. Check the events page to see where he’ll be next.
